HERE ARE 5 EFFECTIVE NETWORKING TIPS FOR YOU

It is said that no man is an island, and truly, success does not come just by one person. In recent times, topics such as networking have taken centre stage in our professional world as we have grown to understand the need to build relationships with different kinds of people.

As a project manager, you must understand the role of networking to your progress if you are going to be a good project manager. In fact, at Step Up Business School, we believe so much in the importance of networking that we have incorporated networking in our quarterly events just to draw our students together and create networking and relationship building amongst them. Were you at our 1st Quarter Professional Sip?

Here are some tips for you when you attend an event like Professional Sip and any other networking related event.

  1. Prepare adequately

Before attending any networking event, make an effort to find out the kind of people you are likely to meet. If there are going to be speakers, find out who they are and in which industries they are. After that, try and identify who you want to connect with. Set clear objectives for what you want to achieve at the event. Whether it’s finding a mentor, learning about new project management methodologies, or scouting for potential team members, knowing your goals will guide your interactions. The only preparation most people make before attending a networking event is their choice of dressing. You need to prepare to also sell yourself because you might meet your potential client there!

2. Make moves to connect

The fact that you are at a networking event does not automatically mean that you will leave with new networks. At the event, be proactive and approach people with confidence. Start conversations by asking open-ended questions about their experiences and challenges in project management. Share your own insights and be willing to offer help or advice. This exchange of value can create a memorable impression. Listen attentively and show genuine interest in what others have to say. This can lead to more in-depth discussions and the potential for a lasting professional connection.

3.Give out business cards

Do you go for events with your business cards? Ensure you have up-to-date business cards and include all necessary contact information. When exchanging cards, make a note of specific topics you discussed with that person on their card. This will make your follow-up more personal and relevant. Treat each exchange not just as a transaction, but as the start of a potential relationship. Remember, the quality of connections often matters more than quantity.

In our modern world, social media handles will also be a great way to connect. Don’t forget to add your handles to your business card.

4. Follow up on your new network

After the event, follow up with new contacts within 48 hours. A personalized message referencing your conversation can help cement the connection. Suggest a concrete next step, such as scheduling a time to call or a private date or discussing a particular project management challenge further. Prompt follow-up demonstrates your interest and professionalism, increasing the likelihood of developing a productive professional relationship.

5. Build the connection

It doesn’t end there. Networking isn’t just about meeting new people; it’s about cultivating those connections over time. Stay in touch with your contacts through occasional check-ins and updates about your project management journey. Offer assistance and share resources when appropriate. By investing in these relationships, you create a network of professionals who can support you—and whom you can support—in various project management endeavors.

We hope to connect with you in our next Professional Sip. Don’t forget to come along with your business card!
