HOW TO DEVELOP PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS

In today’s fast-paced work environment, problem-solving is a critical skill that can set you apart. We may have a negative perception about problems, and even spend days planning just to avoid problems, but the truth still remains – we will face many problems in trying to reach our goals.

How do we develop or cultivate our problem-solving skills to take us a step above our colleagues?

  1. Understand issues

It is said that many people do not listen to understand, but to reply. Understanding is key in solving a problem. Without understanding what the problem is, you will never come out with a good solution.

To excel in problem-solving, you must first thoroughly understand the issues at hand. This requires active listening and asking clarifying questions. Ensure you grasp not only the surface-level problems but also the underlying causes. Make sure you are not addressing only the symptoms of a problem, but most importantly, address the root cause.

2. Set clear objectives

What may be a solution to you may not be to another person. Define what success looks like and set specific, measurable goals. This step ensures that everyone is aligned and working towards a common endpoint. It’s essential to be realistic about what can be achieved within the constraints of time, resources, and the team’s capabilities. By setting clear objectives, you create a focused environment where each team member understands their role in reaching the solution.

3. Brainstorm

Once you understand the problem and have set your objectives, it’s time to brainstorm solutions. Some problems will require you to seek absolutely new solutions and ask new questions. Don’t be quick to approach every problem the same way. A problem today will not have the same solution as that same problem popping up in a decade’s time. Note that in brainstorming, you don’t need perfect ideas. You just need to think over the problem and come up with multiple solutions that will eventually tackle the issue.

4. Evaluate solutions

After generating a list of potential solutions, evaluate them critically. Consider the pros and cons of each option and how they align with your objectives. It’s important to be objective during this phase and to consider the potential impact of each solution. This step may involve some healthy debate within the team, but that’s a valuable part of reaching the best outcome. The goal is to arrive at a solution that is feasible, effective, and has the consensus of the team.

5. Implement solutions

Remember that the mind work and paper work will not get the real work done. Roll out the solutions you have come up with. Remember, a solution is only as good as its execution, so give this phase the attention it deserves.
